The Artificial Intelligence Governance Professional (AIGP) Body of Knowledge (BoK) serves as the foundational guide for professionals seeking to earn the AIGP certification. As with any rapidly evolving field, updates to the BoK reflect the latest trends, regulatory shifts, and best practices in AI governance. The 2024–2025 update brings several important changes—some subtle, others significant.

Below, we break down the key updates to help you understand what’s changed and how it might affect your preparation.
When Do the Changes Take Effect?
The new AIGP Body of Knowledge takes effect February 3, 2025. Exams taken on or after this date will be based on the updated BoK. If you're already preparing using the 2024 version, you’ll want to adjust your study plan soon.
Format: Did It Change?
The exam continues to be a multiple-choice test with assessments of both theoretical and practical competencies, requiring candidates to understand governance principles, ethical considerations, and emerging legal requirements.
The 2025 exam will focus less on technical AI development and more on oversight responsibilities, requiring a broad understanding of AI governance in practice.
Have the Domains Changed?
Yes. The AIGP certification has undergone major updates this year, with a completely restructured Body of Knowledge (BoK) that now follows four domains instead of seven.
Domain I — Understanding the foundations of AI governance
I.A Understand what AI is and why it needs governance.
I.B Establish and communicate organizational expectations for AI governance.
I.C Establish policies and procedures to apply throughout the AI life cycle.
Domain II — Understanding how laws, standards and frameworks apply to AI
II.A Understand how existing data privacy laws apply to AI.
II.B Understand how other types of existing laws apply to AI.
II.C Understand the main elements of the EU AI Act.
II.D Understand the main industry standards and tools that apply to AI.
Domain III — Understanding how to govern AI development
III.A Govern the designing and building of the AI model.
III.B Govern the collection and use of data in training and testing the AI model.
III.C Govern the release, monitoring and maintenance of the AI model.
Domain IV — Understanding how to govern AI deployment and use
IV.A Evaluate key factors and risks relevant to the decision to deploy the AI model.
IV.B Perform key activities to assess the AI model.
IV.C Govern the deployment and use of the AI model.
This shift reflects the maturation of AI governance as a discipline and its growing overlap with legal, risk, and IT frameworks.
Has the Number of Questions Changed?
The exam now includes 100 multiple-choice questions, of which 85 are scored, allowing for broader coverage of new content areas.
You have 3 hours to complete the AIGP exam. There is an optional 15-minute break halfway through, but the clock does not pause for this; it is part of the 3 hours. If you take the break, you must submit the first half of your exam, and you cannot revisit these questions upon return from your break.
What New Topics Were Added?
New governance-related competencies topics have been integrated, such as:
AI risk assessment
AI model differentiation
What Was Removed?
Some older or redundant content was trimmed to make room for the new relevant topics. For example:
History of AI
Regional AI frameworks
The 2024–2025 updates are both necessary and well-executed. AI governance is evolving at breakneck speed, and the AIGP BoK must keep up.
These areas are not only important for passing the exam—they're also critical for being an effective AI governance professional in today’s landscape.
What is a passing score for AIGP?
As stated in the IAPP Certification Candidate Handbook, each IAPP exam has a predetermined cut score established through psychometric analysis and the Exam Development Board. This cut score represents a specific number of correctly answered scored questions and is scaled to 300 on a range from 100 to 500, with 300 or higher considered a passing score.
